GARLIC_a Panacea
Allium sativum: common name garlic belongs to family Alliaceae. Though it is difficult to trace the country of its origin, it is widely cultivated in all parts of Europe, Asia and North Africa.
Botany : the leaves are narrow and flat like grass. The bulb is of compound nature, consisting of numerous bulblets technically known as cloves, grouped together between the membranous scales and enclosed in whitish skin.
Medicinal uses : many great and healing powers have been ascribed to Garlic. It possess stimulant and stomachic properties in addition to its other virtues. As an antiseptic, it's use has long been recognised. It's raw juice mixed with water are applied to wounds.
Pounded with honey and taken 2 or 3 nights successively is good to treat rheumatism.
Aqueous extract of it taken for two months reduced lipid levels in serum and liver.
It's extract reduces arterial blood pressure in human beings.
It also lowers levels of total, free and ester cholesterol.
It has antiboitic activity due to allicin present in it.
